Writers/Poets Galore Line Up for Cavan for the 2019 AT The Edge Literary Evening
AT The Edge, Cavan will bring a fab line up of writers and poets to town this year. Funded by Cavan Arts Office, AT The Edge, Cavan will be hosting ten literary artists over three evenings: Tuesday 30 April, Tuesday August 27 August, and Tuesday 29 October 2019, and is organising an extra Irish, English and Scottish Poetry reading on Tuesday 15 October.
Irish poets and writers coming to read are Annemarie ni Churreain, Ron Carey, Edward O’Dwyer, Jessamine O’Connor, Glen Wilson, Jackie Gorman, Adam Wyeth, Anne Walsh Donnelly, Orla Fay and Anne Tannem. Further biographical information will be available nearer the events. There is also a special Scots/English/Irish and Welsh evening on Tuesday 15 October where Hugh Mcmillan, Magi Gibson, Marcas Mac an Tuairneir,, Neil Young and Kate Ennals will read. All the events will take place at the Johnston Library, Cavan at 6.30pm, and will be followed by an open mic so local people can also show off their own literary talent.
“I have seen most of the poets and writers who are coming to Cavan this year perform and we are in for a treat,” said Kate Ennals, curator of AT The Edge.
“This is the sixth year of AT The Edge Cavan, and I am proud and pleased that it is so well supported by both the Arts Office and local people. Over the years, Cavan has amassed a strong network of writers and poets, and AT The Edge, Cavan is an opportunity for people to come together, listen and read themselves, as well as touch base and exchange news. It is great to see the turn out and AT The Edge, Cavan is a really good evening.
“I also want to thank the poets and writers who come to read. Most are well known, published poets, who are busy reading, or at workshops across the country and abroad, yet they still enjoy coming to read and meet local people at local arts events. And there is nothing better than listening to someone read their own work in comfortable surroundings, and we are lucky to be able to use the Johnston Library free of charge. It’s a lovely evening, not pretentious, and worth a try. I look forward to seeing people there.”
AT The Edge, Cavan is funding by the Cavan Arts Office. For further information, contact Kate Ennals at kateennals@live.co.uk

€5m fund means charities can claim VAT relief for the first time from January.
Under the scheme, charities will receive a refund of their VAT costs based on the level of non-public funding they receive.Sun 9th Dec 6:01 AM
THE GOVERNMENT HAS confirmed that there will be a new tax relief scheme made available to charities who want to apply for exemptions.
It means that charities who apply for the exemption could pay less tax, which would lead to more money raised by charities through fundraising going to those causes.
Responding to a question from Fianna Fáil’s finance spokesperson Michael McGrath, the Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe said:
“I am advised that the Revenue Commissioners have developed systems to enable charities submit claims and to support processing and payment of claims. The facility to make claims under the scheme will be available on ROS from January 2019.”
The fund would mean that charities will receive a refund of their VAT costs based on the level of non-public funding they receive.
The scheme will see the compensation paid one year in arrears, so the VAT costs that charities have incurred in 2018 are applicable.
Donohoe said that charities would be entitled to a refund of a proportion of their VAT costs based on the level of non-public funding they receive.
For example, where a charity’s gross income for 2018 involves 30% funding from State/EU/international organisations and 70% from privately sourced income, they can claim 70% of their VAT input costs for the year.
Where the total amount of claims in a year exceeds the capped amount, charities will be paid on a pro rata basis, i.e. where the total value of claims is double the capped pool amount, each charity will receive 50% of their claim. The Revenue Commissioners are expected to issue detailed guidance about the operation of the scheme once the Ministerial Order giving effect to the scheme is signed into law later this month.
“Fianna Fáil has been calling for the establishment of a VAT compensation scheme for charities for quite some time,” McGrath said, “and was to the fore in securing the inclusion of the scheme in the Budget over a year ago.”
“While the €5m fund available for VAT refunds is modest, it represents an important start and Fianna Fáil would support the expansion of this scheme in the years ahead.”

The Wheel invites you to join us in Virginia, Co. Cavan on Tuesday, 6 November at 6pm for a very special networking session focusing on how you can Spark Change In Your Community.
What do you think of when you hear the word ‘sustainability’? It’s safe to say that most people associate it with protecting the natural environment – ensuring that we use natural resources in such a way that future generations can also access them. Well, that’s part of it, but there’s more to it! The Wheel sees ‘sustainable’ communities as being economically thriving, environmentally healthy and socially resilient. And we know that Irish nonprofits are striving daily to become more sustainable and are actively working to make their communities better places to live.
We want to empower the doers in every community to spark change by signing up to the Spark Change Challenge and sharing their success stories with other communities.
At the event you will hear about innovative and creative initiatives that enhance and improve community resilience and find out how you can take the Spark Change Challenge. You will also get access to a range of tools to support you in your sustainability journey.
Hosted by Marjan Boers, The Wheel’s Local Representative for Cavan, Meath and Louth and led by Dr. Vincent Carragher and Johnny Sheehan, this special evening gathering will also serve as a fantastic way for you to connect and network with your local nonprofit colleagues.
So, register now for this free event. It’s taking place in the Virginia Show Grounds, The Showgrounds, Rahardrum, Virginia, Co. Cavan.

8. FAMILY ADDICTION SUPPORT PROGRAM
The group will be running a number of programmes in Louth and Meath in October and November.
They are hosted and presented by ourselves, the Family Addiction Support Network and Senator Frances Black's RISE Foundation.
The programmes are designed as a safe and secure space in which family members, and others, who are affected by the addictive behaviour of another, can begin a process of recovery and healing. They are presented and facilitated by trained staff from the RISE Foundation, supported by ourselves.

Two of these courses will be starting on the 4th Of October; one in Drogheda and one in Kells. Another course will be held in Ardee but beginning on the 22nd of November.

15. Cavan schools to save thousands on new alerts system each year
· Revolutionary SchoolAlert.ie system operates across tried and trusted apps
Schools across Cavan are set to save thousands of euro each year by using a new alerts system which offers a far more affordable ‘text a parent’ solution that totally eliminates costly SMS text message credits.
Irish firm SchoolAlerts.ie delivers alerts using well-known apps for free. Founder and tech expert, Brendan Cunningham, sayswww.SchoolAlerts.ie will eliminate the need for Cavan’s 87 schools – 76 primary and 11 second level – to rely solely on messaging systems that cost up to 7 cent per individual text.
“Instead we send alerts to parents as push notifications using well-known smartphone apps such as Viber, Facebook Messenger and Telegram that parents are already familiar with. These apps are often already installed on the parent’s phone, so there is no set up involved. It’s ideal for parents with children spread across several schools and the one account can effectively become the one-stop-shop for all school communications.
“Because push notifications do not cost us, they do not cost the school either. Instead of charging for individual alerts like SMS companies would, we charge a far smaller, annual flat fee for our service and schools. Schools operate the system like they would any messaging board and can send each message for free during the school year.
“Several of the schools we’ve engaged with were spending an average €1,000 a year on texts. Our flat fee (€299 per year inclusive of VAT) is a fraction of this. A shocking 87% of schools we surveyed see the cost of SMS texts as prohibitive and in many cases, they said they cannot afford to send all the messages that they would like,” Cunningham explained.
Schools who want to register can visit the Signup Page and enter their Roll Number. Alerts can then be sent to the entire school, to individual classes or to individual parents in the event of an unexplained absence etc.
The school owns the database of parent contact information and the entire system is GDPR compliant. All parents need to do once their school has signed up is register their phone number on the service website so the SchoolAlerts.ie team can independently verify that they are part of a school's contact list.
“If somebody tries to register on our site with a mobile that we do not recognise from a school's contact list, then they will not be allowed to sign up.”
The new system also includes additional features which include creating interactive polls for parents on issues such as school tour venues, feedback, etc, as well as an option to link up with Met Eireann Orange and Red weather warnings which can be automatically forwarded to parents during storm season.
· For more on the system, log on to www.SchoolAlerts.ie
ENDS
Note to Editors:
The Facts:
· 98% of Irish households have at least one parent with a smartphone and use the relevant apps
· 87% of schools surveyed see the cost of SMS texts as prohibitive. In many cases schools cannot afford to send all the messages that they would like
· 74% of Irish people have a Facebook account so they can be contacted for free using the Messenger App. They are used to getting other messages for free through Messenger so schools should be no different.
· 4% of SMS Text Messages do not deliver to phones when they are sent from bulk-messaging texting companies. They get lost in cyberspace and parents sometimes miss out on important school messages.
How a Parent registers
All parents need to do is register their phone number on the service website so the SchoolAlerts.ie team can independently verify that they are part of a school's contact list.
Once a verified parent signs up on SchoolAlerts.ie they can log in to the site to get a unique code. By typing this code into the page on Facebook Messenger, Telegram or Viber it means the service can link them up and start sending them alerts. This is a very quick process and it only takes a moment for parents to complete at the start of the school year.
How it works for schools
Schools who want to register can visit the Signup Page and enter their Roll Number. Alerts can then be sent to the entire school, to individual classes or to individual parents in the event of an unexplained absence etc.
The school owns the database of parent contact information and therefore the school is the Data Controller. As service provider, SchoolAlerts.ie is nominated Data Processor for a defined series of tasks on behalf of the school.
Both parties need to have a signed GDPR "Controller:Processor Agreement" in place before SchoolAlerts.ie can offer schools this service. There is no provision for SchoolAlerts.ie to store children's names in this system. They regard this as extremely high-risk data and it is not required for them to offer a solution to contact parents.

This Border Park will consists of the restoration of a two storey Victorian house into a Heritage and Habitat peace and reconciliation visitor centre. The visitor centre has been designed to build upon cross-border and cross-community relationships by promoting a greater understanding of the history and heritage of the area. The visitor centre will also be a focal point for several cross-border trails.

4. Family Caregiving Workshop
My name is Kevin Deegan and I am a research assistant with Care Alliance Ireland. I am responsible for coordinating six regional workshops across the country. The reason I am emailing you is to request assistance in spreading word of an upcoming workshop in Cavan in October.
To summarise as briefly as I can, this project began in 2015 under the title "Towards Resilience in Family Caregiving for People with Dementia" which brought together numerous family carers of people with dementia and asked them to share the stories and experiences as care givers and how it has affected their lives.
The workshop will take place in:
1. Cavan – Cavan Crystal Hotel (October 2nd)
The workshop will last about three hours from 10:00 – 13:00 and family carers will also be reimbursed for any travel expenses or care costs, should they attend a workshop. Refreshments will be provided for each person during the meeting and lunch will be served after the workshop.
If you know of any family carers of people with dementia that may wish to take part in the workshop then we would be very grateful if you could pass along this information.
Thank you again for your help and I look forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards,
Kevin Deegan

5. Sustainable Communities Toolkit
Produced in partnership with the Environmental Protection Agency, Living Better, Using Less: a Sustainable Communities toolkit for Community and Voluntary Organisations is an online toolkit to help communities achieve greater sustainability. Using videos, questions, activities, examples, case studies and suggested actions, the toolkit provides community and voluntary organisations with practical guidance for implementing sustainability solutions within both rural and urban communities.
The toolkit is broken down into 5 key themes:
1) Ecological Integrity
In a world of changing climate, over reliance on the earth's resources and loss of biodiversity, communities can be part of a wider movement of change towards a sustainable future. Learn More >>
2) Health & Well-being
Everyone in our community should be able to flourish and thrive, feel connected, satisfied with services and able to cope with whatever knocks they encounter now and for future generations. Learn More >>
3) Participation & Engagement
A sustainable community is one that puts its most vulnerable members at its centre. How do we ensure all voices are at the decision-making table and that services are as accessible as possible? Learn More >>
4) Culture & Heritage
Each community is unique in their own special way and we need to nurture this integrity of place so that when faced with difficult decisions, that communities will know what they are willing to accept. Learn more >>
5) Economic Resilience
How can we make our communities more financially sustainable, while at the same time challenging unsustainable economic models of development and promoting a model of development that is good for people, good for planet. Learn More >>

6. Glangevlin Support
If you know of any families who might consider a move to Glangevlin now or in the future, pass on the information below. Would you also pass this information on through your local contacts and social media.

“We are a small community in west Cavan trying to save our school. With a dwindling population we are asking you to take the plunge and join us for a year of rural living. There is no commitment required, simply give country living a go and we will do everything to support you.
Have you ever considered a move to the countryside. A year of rural living can reset your clock, offer you a different pace of life and a different perspective, the children become increasingly aware of the seasons, (picking the fruit on the hedgerow), aware of time, (through the expansive views of our sunrise and sunset), and space (the stars; with little to no light pollution our nights are as spectacular as our days).
If only as a respite from city living or a break, we ask that you consider this experience. Glangevlin has never had this opportunity to invite people to live in our community but a small number of homes have been made available to us in our efforts to save the school.”
7. Mental Health Community Certificate

8. FRIENDS OF EARTH FESTIVAL VOLUNTEERS
For the last 3 years, Friends of the Earth has brought a team of volunteers to Ireland's biggest music, comedy and spoken word festival - Electric Picnic.
Will you be part of it this year? Here's the deal:In return for volunteering each of the three days for 6 hours each day (the earliest you would be working is 10am, and the latest 9pm), either petitioning on the Waste Reduction Bill, working the Cup Refund Points or engaging festival-goers on what waste goes in what bin, you get -
· A free ticket to the entire festival
· Free transport by private coach from Dublin (Merrion Square South) on Thursday August 30th at 2:30pm
· Free transport back to Dublin on one of the Marathon coaches that leaves the festival every hour from the Sunday evening into the Monday morning
· A place in eco-camping
· A dinner on the evening of August 30th
· A free dinner with the other volunteers on the final evening
In return, you are required to:
· Attend one training session before the festival on either August 16th (6-8pm, Dublin) or 19th (1-3pm, Dublin)
· Camp with the rest of the volunteers in the eco-campsite
· Sign a volunteer agreement
· Pay a fully refundable deposit*
· Be over 18
· Supply all of your own camping equipment
Having a large amount of enthusiastic volunteers on site has a huge impact on how much recycling happens at the festival. Since 2015, the efforts of the Green Messengers have collectively resulted in:
· 2015 - 60,000 plastic cups being returned
· 2016 -139,855 plastic cups being returned
· 2017 - 265,048 plastic cups being returned
Do you want to be part of raising this figure even higher?Festivals can be intense bursts of waste; 55,000+ people in a contained area, with plastic littering the arena floor, beer cans often blanketing the ground in the campsites, melding with broken tents on the Monday morning to provide a perfectly shameful picture for the front page of every Irish newspaper.
But you can be part of a team to make Electric Picnic the greenest festival in Ireland. Imagine an atmosphere of care, responsibility, and shared respect for our natural environment. You can be part of creating that atmosphere, and the best part? As a reward, you get a free weekend pass to this brilliant festival.
So if you want to chat to festival-goers about the need for a strong Waste Reduction Bill, help them figure out which bin their waste goes in, and be part of a real-life deposit return scheme for plastic cups and bottles, then we want you to join us in Stradbally from the afternoon of August 30th until the evening of Sunday 2nd September.
Sound good?
Apply to volunteer now!
Meaghan, Claudia, Oisín, Kate & Cara
Friends of the Earth
*We need to ask for a deposit because we can't take the risk that volunteers won't show up, we hope you can understand that! The deposit will be €150, to be paid in one instalment. If you cannot afford this, please get in touch with us as we don't want financial difficulties to prevent anyone from taking part.

Ten New Community Representatives Elected From The CavanPPN To Voice Community Issues and Needs both Locally and Nationally!!!

Below are the ten community representatives elected by their peers at a community gathering (plenary) open to all community groups registered with PPN at The Cavan Crystal Hotel on Saturday September 19th. Deadline for nominations was Thursday 17th and registered community groups held one vote each on the day.
We are confident that these new voices will strengthen and empower community representation for County Cavan and give us a brilliant fresh perspective on developing YOUR PPN going forward.
The Plenary also focused on an overview of what PPNs are (in the slideshow) and had guest speakers from Voice Ireland and StreetFeast, an environmental and social inclusive pair of national initiatives.
We would like to thank the groups who engaged in this day and wish all the best to the brilliant new representatives who put themselves forward for these positions, CavanPPN and community are enriched as a result.

10. EPA Regional Gathering Taking Place
Dear Cavan PPN,
Please see below, email from the Environmental Protection Agency in relation to a forthcoming Regional Gathering of the National Dialogue on Climate Action, taking place in Athlone on 23rd June. I work for a company called M.CO, who have been retained by the EPA to assist with this activity. I will follow up with a call in relation to this soon.
Kind regards,
Ruth Doyle
OPEN LETTER FROM EPA
Dear PPN,
The Programme for a Partnership Government commits to establishing a National Dialogue on Climate Action (NDCA) which is intended to engage people on the challenge of climate change; motivate changes in behaviour; and create structures at local, regional and national levels to support the generation of ideas and their translation into action.
The Governments’ National Dialogue for Climate action envisages 4 to 5 Regional Gatherings as part of the public engagement process followed up by events at local authority level. The Minister (DCCAE) has decided that the first Regional Gathering will take place in Athlone on Saturday 23rd June (in the Radisson Blu). The Regional Gatherings will reflect, where possible, the new Local Authority Regional Climate Action Offices. This first meeting in Athlone on the 23rd June will invite people from the northern half of the 'Eastern & Midlands Regional Climate Action Office' territory, which includes: Offaly, Roscommon, Leitrim, Monaghan, Louth, Meath, Cavan, Westmeath, & Longford.
The EPA has been given the role of Secretariat to the National Dialogue process and has retained the services of professional engagement consultants MC.O (www.mco.ie) in designing and delivering this first Regional Meeting. We are keen to get your advice on how best involve the citizens in your county and networks. We envisage sending out a mail through to the PPN mailing list along with using local media channels and Facebook pages to promote the event - which will be targeted at members of the public and also for representatives of community groups. M.CO will follow up with a phone call in the coming days to provide further details on the Gathering and is looking forward to hearing your feedback. We want to ensure that our approach to engagement is tailored to the local context so your input and support is much appreciated in helping us make this first Regional Gathering a success.
Kind regards
Jonathan

11. Cavan Filipino Event
Dear All,
In line with our aim to celebrate cultural diversity, and probably a step towards developing a work programme, we are happy to announce that the Cavan Filipino Community will be celebrating our Philippine Independence Day on Saturday 16th of June from 11am at the Killygarry Community Centre where we will showcase Philippine food and heritage.
We will explain our traditional dishes, native costumes, sports/games, and perform some folk dances/skits. The event will cater to the Irish and other ethnic minority groups in Cavan to give everyone a chance to learn about the Philippines, the Philippine culture, as well as get a profile of the Philippine migrant community in Cavan and Ireland.
This gathering will also be an opportunity to introduce the new Cavan Multicultural Network to the Filipino Community and to encourage more Filipinos to join and support the organisation.
Thank you and we hope to see you there!

13. Voices For Change one-day Training
Have you ever wondered how Government policy is actually made and how you can influence it? This practical one-day training will improve your understanding and build your skills to become an effective policy influencer.
Voices for Change is a practical one-day training that will help you improve your policy influencing skills and ability. You'll start the day with an invaluable introduction into how government policy is actually made in Ireland and the ways in which community and voluntary organisations, charities and social enterprises on the ground can have a real and profound impact on public policy.
You will also get to carry out some practical exercises, which will equip you to become a more effective policy influencer in your own community – which, when working in concert with others, can lead to significant change at the national level too.
You will leave the session with:
· Knowledge and understanding of how Ireland’s policy making system works in practice;
· Clarity about the ways in which local community and voluntary organisations can influence policy;
· A deepened understanding of how to be an effective policy influencer on behalf of their organisation and community.

***WEATHER ALERT*** PLEASE SHARE
With the predicted onslaught of very cold weather this week which may include hard frost, wind chill and snow and if there is an older person living in your neighbourhood, particularly one who is living alone or might have trouble getting about, we would encourage you to visit or call them to check that they are ok - don't depend on others to do it. Dropping in to say hello or a quick phone call to make sure everything is okay will always be welcome
People can be reluctant to look in on neighbours as they don't want to seem intrusive but experience shows that it is always appreciated and a great source of reassurance for someone to know their neighbours are thinking about them.
Snow and ice add to the problem as many may not be able to get out to buy food, fuel or medical supplies.
For further information, please visit the Governments Be Winter Ready website on; www.winterready.ie

Department of Children and Youth Affairs€6.8m Grants open for extra Childcare spaces, play areas and maintenance Monday 12th February – Friday 9th March 2018
Monday 12th February, 2018 (received by CavanPPN 21.2.18)
Childcare centres are being invited to apply for €6.8m in funding for extra spaces, natural outdoor play areas and maintenance work, according to the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Dr Katherine Zappone.
Applications open today (12th February 2018) for childcare and school age services to apply for the capital grants across a range of strands.
Making the announcement Minister Zappone added
“This year we will invest €485 million, an increase of 80% over the last three budgets, to continue working towards accessible affordable quality childcare.
On the capital grants in particular, I know from my visits to services throughout the country how important it is that we continue to invest and build the infrastructure and capacity of the early years sector.
The inclusion of natural outdoor play areas in particular is allowing our children to explore more and seek adventure in a learning environment. I am delighted to support this work with a significant capital investment – which will benefit children, parents and providers in the coming months.
I encourage all providers to see how the funding can be used to boost or improve their existing services and facilities.”
The application window for the 2018 Early Years and School Age Capital Grants opened today Monday 12th February at 12.00am. Services can apply through the PIP system for the next four weeks, until 3.00pm on Friday 9th March.
The Minister has previously outlined the €6.86 million to be spent across Early Year and School Age Childcare under five funding strands as follows:

A CALL FOR ENVIRONMENT
Cavan Public Participation Network
Environment Sector Meeting, Cana House, Farnham St. Cavan Town. 25.1.18
Meeting Report Meeting Started 7pm
1. Welcome & Introduction: an overview of the Environment Sector of CavanPPN was given to members and the lack of engagement discussed. The PPN Resource Worker provided a list of registered groups (below)*.
2. CavanPPN Enviro-Workplan
(i) Pollinator Plan Event: The aim being to provide a platform to explain, encourage & promote pollination strategies in Cavan. This is to undertaken with local Tidy Towns and work with Heather Bothwell to develop. Members will participate and host stands at event and do workshops.
(ii) Community Garden Network: This was very proactively discussed by members. Declan Fitzpatrick volunteered to ring the garden contacts to encourage them to partake in a produce show in Ballinagh in Aug/Sept which he will liaise with next week. It was suggested that garden visits be facilitated to allow community gardens see what they are doing to inspire eachother. One last suggestion was to enter a joint “mini garden” in the shape of Cavan (2mx3m) for Bloom this year and therefore organize community gardeners to visit Bloom. Daniel will first compile a list of contacts of the community gardens active in County Cavan.
(iii) Reduce/Reuse/Recycle/Upcycle Workshop: To have a workshop on how to reduce your waste at point of purchase, reuse it in inspiring ways and recycle/upcycle waste. Examples included pallet furniture via mens sheds, a plastic bottle greenhouse and investigating Barry Wilson of Belturbet’s project to have a waste collector for shoppers in Belturbet at point of sale. Instead of doing a separate event it might be better to partner with the produce show in Ballinagh for this.
3. Community Representation on Cavan County Council’s Environment & Planning Strategic Policy Committee: an informative discussion was had on what this post entails and the realistic effectiveness of the SPCs. It was also queried if persons could jointly hold the position to lessen the burden, particularly as SPCs are held in the daytime which is sometimes inconvenient for volunteers who work. Barry Kavanagh of Natures Patch Network volunteered for the position.
He was proposed by Gowska Wilkowska and seconded by Declan Fitzpatrick.
4. AOB: It was mentioned that members avail of the entertaining monologue on Plastic Bags by Seamus O’Rourke.
Meeting Ended 8.20pm
*List of registered Environment Sector Groups in CavanPPN: Bailieborough Gardens, Cavan Birdwatch Branch, Cavan Beekeepers Association, PATCH Nature Network, Community Resilience Cavan, Fairgreen Community Gardens, Drumlane Community Gardens, Killeshandra Organic Gardening Club, Kilnavara Community Garden, Realtog Community Garden.
note: 10 groups out if 320 represents a 3.2% portion which is in line with the national estimate of 3% environment groups as a total of PPN registrations (2016 National PPN Report)

WINNERS OF THE CAVAN ENVIRO-WRITERS PRIZE 2017

This year we asked for local people to contribute their pieces to imagine what Cavan in 2118 might look like. We got some amazing ideas and contributions but narrowed it down to two. A special thanks to Sana Cheema for helping organise the competition as part of her Gaisce project:
Winner: Kyla McGowan (14) from Bailieborough
Cavan Of 2118:
The blue lakes of Cavan, which it was once famous for
they're dried up, they're gone
what was once, is now no more.
The brown smog hangs heavy, each day in the sky
the starving people line the streets
ready to die.
Skyscrapers were built, one hundred stories high
to house those who wanted, and hoped to stay alive
The lush green drumlins and the rolling hills
were flattened by the weight of the buildings
and the lumber mills.
Dublin was the first to go then Cork and Kerry too,
whole counties underwater, no one knew what to do.
As the rest of Ireland flooded and people moved inland
Cavan became the capital, everything was in high demand
Food and clean water ran out, everyone was in despair,
people lined the streets each day waiting for their share.
If only people had changed their ways back in 2017,
we’d be living in a Utopia just as we dreamed.
2nd Place: Jeanette Murray (for her grandson in Saint Clare's Primary School in Ballyjamesduff)
Poor Mother Earth in 2118
By Jeanette Murray
I don’t have much hope
for twentyone eighteen,
Not afterlast Friday
From what I’d just seen.
I was in the recycling
Binning tins and the rest,
For the good of the planet
Sure it’s all for the best.
Right then it happened
Couldn’t believe what I’d seen
A man stuffing nappies
In the glass only bins.
Well my eyes shot with fire
And I spat when I spoke
You damn idiot this place
In this town is no joke
It’s the likes of you
That will close this facility,
After all our hard work
to get this amenity.
He never batted an eye
He carried on, kept it up,
and more rubbish followed
the little ignorant pup
He strolled off with a swagger
A smirk on his face
But I phoned Cavan Council
With his car number plate.

The CavanPPN Autumn Gathering
CavanPPN Autumn Plenary Gathering
CavanPPN held its Autumn Gathering in The Cavan Crystal Hotel last Saturday 25th of November. The meeting opened with a tribute by Cavan’s Cathaoirleach Paddy McDonald, to Brendan Reilly, CEO of Breffni Integrated who so recently lost his life in a tragic accident.
The day was divided into three sections:
In section one representatives from the community heard from spokespersons from the PPN
1. Chris Kirk of Killeshandra Tidy Towns spoke on the work of CavanPPN since it was established.
2. Jim O’Reilly of Kilcogy Community First Responders spoke on the 2018 Workplan of the PPN.
3. Noleen Brady Smith of Maghera spoke on the Linkage groups and how representatives speak for community in the PPN.
This was followed by a presentation on Local Community Water by Gretta McCarron, the Local Community Water Officer for this region with a Q&A session.
The next part of the day entailed entertainment, networking and representing. Sarah Garden presented a very engaging Singing Workshop while members also had a chance to network and speak to Linkage Representatives at tables set aside on topics such as Local Transport, Policing, Disabilities and more.
We returned after lunch to hear from 3 national speakers:
1. Simon Rooney of Voice Ireland gave a very informative and engaging talk on recycling and supporting the environment with an eye opening short video.
2. Johnny Sheehan and Marjan Boers of The Wheel spoke about the benefits of membership in Ireland’s fastest growing support, training and advocate agency for community.
3. Martina Westphal spoke on the scary topic of insurance for community groups & the details of this.
Each presenter was rotated around the tables in a world-café speed dating style session, giving smaller groups greater exposure for conversational engagement on the three topics. It was a great way to place both community and agency on equal footing and learn from one another.
After final reflections from the tables’ spokespersons and presenters we called it a day, with people heading home with full bellies, entertained singing voices and more informed heads. It was a great day for all involved with 48 representatives attending from community groups from across the county.

WHY VOLUNTEER: A Story

CavanVIS: Case Study on Volunteer Patsy Sheridan
Patsy Sheridan is and always has been a local of Cavan Town. Patsy was not involved in his local Men’s Shed or the Community Radio before 2014 because he always kept busy, he’s a man with many plans and he likes to keep active and about.
Then, in 2014 Patsy fell ill. It was the type of illness that shakes you to your core and makes you question everything and he had plenty of time to do it because the doctors forbade him from the hectic and physically demanding lifestyle he once had. He’s not young, but nor is he old so Patsy could not simply lie down and die. His motto is “life’s for living, not moping around”.
So, at first he joined a small amateur radio station. A place where he knew no one and he could sit and keep busy but get out and about nonetheless. Two years on Patsy is making 2 shows a week with thousands of listeners tuning in all throughout the year. Everywhere he goes in town, people beep and wave and Patsy brings a smile.
Next, a Men’s Shed opened up and Patsy – being inclined to be a handy enough fella – joined on the promise to his family he’d take it easy. He doesn’t though. He’s in there three times a week busting a gut, but not from hard work; it’s all from laughter. You see, for Patsy a Men’s Shed is there to produce 2 things; a place for men to go and a place for men to laugh. Patsy daily provides this.
So, in 3 years Patsy has gone from a hard working workaholic who had the rug torn from under him by illness and circumstance to seeing that volunteering can transform your life, make you a new and better person and not only bring a smile to his face but put on smile on others. Patsy is a volunteer hero and we’re proud to have him with us.
Daniel Downey of CavanPPN, Shane Dolan of Cavan Radio and Paddy Reilly of Cavan Men's Shed
I have read over this story and though I’m embarrassed I’m happy to see it go out to try and encourage others to get involved in their local communities.
Thanks
